TR2/3/3A Is there a timing cover seal that will last more than a couple of year?

i think some of the different thoughts here are because the tensioner is located on the front engine plate on a TR3, but on the timing cover itself on a Spitfire/TR6.
 
If you haven't in the past, the next time follow the sequence in Bentley for your 250 whereby the cover is installed before installing the oil seal sleeve. That will tilt the lips of the oil seal inward, toward the engine rather than outward, toward the damper as they would if installed before installing the cover.

Poolboy, good point! Might also be good idea to leave the bolts loose on the timing cover and quickly install the oil sleeve before the sealant on the cover goes hard, then tighten the cover bolts. That might help center the seal on the shaft.

Until I watched this thread continue to grow, I had no idea the front seal was even an issue. I've always installed it with the engine on a stand and not had any problems. I have to assume most of these issues are when installing it while leaning deep over a wing into the engine bay??
