"Life" has finally slowed to a point where I have been able to repair my overheated 74 Midget, I blew the bulb right off the capilary tube & I'm looking into a "plan B" if I can't repair it, I'm sure the fittings are a special thread but is there any way to adapt an after market electrical temp gauge to the fitting on the 1275 motor ? I searched & see lots of info on repairing & replacing, but I can't afford the 200 bucks for a new one right now & if I can't fix it... I still would like to drive it :smile:

A $20 gauge from autozone will fit it.

The temp gauge / sender I got had a 1/8 npt sender & that wouldn't fit right in (what do you expect for 9 bucks on Amazon lol), so I cut the old packing nut out from the capillary tube & drilled & tapped the ID to 1/8 NPT - That worked just fine !, compared gauge to my temp gun & it was bang on - Good to Go !

It works. However, substitute dry ice for the water/salt chilling bath. It's colder and cleaner.

Like Jer, I have made sending unit adapters by drilling out and tapping old temperature gauge nuts and old electrical sending units. For future reference, the temperature sender tap in the A-series heads is 5/8-18. However, the sending units don't seal on their threads, they seal on the conical seat at the bottom of the tapped hole. Teflon tape is your friend.
