Is building a race replica folly?

Try Googlin g "FIA Rules & Regulations".

Just got back from a vintage race at The Glen.

Saw these two "works replicas" there.

The first one is so good, it was invited to the Monterey Historics a few years ago.

It would be fun to do something like this to my MGB.

I'll throw this in, because I had more than a couple of customer go this route, some thing that are done to race cars don't make for very enjoyalbe street driven cars, race seats for one are extremely difficult to get in or out of, so I rebuild your early seats, I got them in my 67 MGB, and with new foam and covers, they are very comfortable, second, use carpet in the interior, a race car interior, sound doesn't much matter, but on the street it does, as well as heat insulation, third if you do a roll cage, I would not do door bars, as crawling over them will get old real quick. I would also not go the fuel cell route as this will take up your spare tire storage.

Good points, Hap.

I've put more thought into this than actual effort so far and I've come to the conclusion that there are just some creature comforts that need to be addressed rather than throwing everything towards "race replica".

I'm sure the plan will change from time to time as this transition will take several years but I'm just trying to get a grasp on what FIA Spec actually is for this car. There may be a few "pick and choose" type of items that will have to be passed over as this car won't see any competition other than an occasional trackday, perhaps.

edit: Homologation papers received.

I wish you guys would stop posting pictures - just as I convince myself that I don't have the time/space/money/talent to build a replica like this, a picture will show up somewhere and the mind starts to wander.....

Listen, my MGB GT historic racer has been under construction for years trying to make it like the old ones - it is now no longer street legal, FWIW.

The two cars you saw belong to John Targett and to Mike Kusch respectively, and you can see many more photos of their cars in these two articles:

John Targett's 1964 MGB Race Car (40 photos)

Mike Kusch's 1964 MGB Race Car (47 photos)

Except for color, this car is pretty much cut from the same cloth and you'll probably like it too:

Those are some sweet cars....saw several things I need to do to mine from them....thanks

I'd love to get the factory style valances.

Thanks for the added picture links. Both of those red cars were very nice.

The blue one (last link) is a similar colour to my new race car.

The external oil pump is interesting.

And at least two of these cars "girdle" their rear leaf springs with ordinary worm-type hose clamps. I do the same thing......and I find I break one or two clamps each event.
