GT6 Is $1000 a good deal on a '72 GT6

To buy or not to buy - depends on your fun budget. It really doesn't matter what you pay for the car but whether it is within you fun budget. That said, $1,000 for a running GT6 is a deal, subject to rust concerns, of course.

I bought a 72 GT6 this summer for $2,100 and drove it home, but I had to spend another $300-$400 to fix some things (steering, rear carrier bearing, tuneup, clutch M/C) to make it reliable driver. Parts for Triumph seem to be a lot cheaper than those for Jaguar or Healey. The GT6 is a great runner but with the standard (non overdrive) gearbox, the engine has to turn 4,000 to stay up woth interstate traffic.

In the last 7 months, I've driven this car about 2,300 miles. It has been a lot more fun than I budgeted and I look forward to more.

As usual in this Forum, some very good advice above.

Two two basic things about GT6 restoration. Really, these are all that matter: 1) Your restoration budget; 2) Your ability to fix LBCs.

As a general rule, if #1 is deficient, number two becomes far more important. And, if #2 is deficient, #1 is all that matters.

As stated above, rust is the enemy. The mechanical stuff on GT6s is relatively easy to fix, and parts are out there. However, body work is very expensive, takes great skill (and lotsa tools), and is difficult to fix.

Unless, of course, you have a healthy #1 and can pay someone else to do it.

Good luck, let us know . . .

Go for it!
If I found one like that (or an MGB GT),
for that price,I'd have a hard time passing it by.

Amateur floor repairs.... Wow. I could do much better!

I have no idea what they did to make the rear sit like this...

You can't tell here, but the entire interior is soaked!!! It Rained 4 days ago!!!

The original pictures this thread started with were taken 3 years ago. Then it sat outside for 3 years!!!
It has a cheap paint job. All the rubber seals are rotted. All the body parts need some kind of attention. It does not run without a gas can suck from. The rust is RAMPANT! The brakes are toast. Its not drivable at all. Its fixable but, whew! Also, I misunderstood the price. He wants $1495 and accepting offers or trades.

Way too much work for me... I got enough work to do...

Anyone interested?

I'll pass.

Yikes!

<span style="color: #006600">"Assume there is some rust in the floors.
Assume there are some gearbox issues.
Assume the rear end needs work.
Assume the Rotoflex joints need to be replaced.

All of that, and as long as the car isn't all torn up and the parts are mostly there, make him an offer under $1K and buy it. Even if the engine needs work.

Looks like a promising project. Have fun!"</span>

OK, I think I will retract my previous bold statement of encouragement.

Three year old pictures and then it sat outside since then? Sounds like something found on eBay!

New bold statement of encouragement:

Run away! Run away!

Best regards,

I never ran so fast in my life!!!
Its worth less than that pile of bumpers in the truck beside it.

My guess it will be on ebay in a month. Probably sell for $2500...

I don't know the owner, just want to prevent this GT6 from being crushed or misrepresented on ebay...

With Mike's permission his number is 513-477-2387. He is willing to take an offer or trade...

That's sad, he wants too much for the state that it's in. I would have loved to have seen it when it was pulled out of storage 3 years ago.

I think that I'll change my opinion on it
after seeing the newer pictures.
I think that you were smart in passing on it.
Your Wife would never let you forget about it,if
you had gotten it.

Wow, what a disappointment! Only thing I can say in defense of the poor car is that the rear end would settle right back down as soon as it rolled 20 ft. or so; it appears someone jacked up the rear and set it back down. That's the LEAST of the car's problems.

WHERE outside did the poor thing sit -- on a beach beside the ocean?

Run like the dickens to the nearest jewelry store and buy your wife something nice. She saved you a bunch of bucks.

You know.... I should. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Here in Cincinnati, they use salt on the roads when there is no snow in the forecast... I could never figure that out. As soon as snow hits they are out of salt....
I go through a lot of exhaust systems on my cars... One guy said verbatim what you said in regards to a warranty claim on a Stainless steel Magnaflow system that completely corroded from the mufflers to back. Stainless doesn't like salt either.
