Intresting MG Fact

I'd bet some of you MG historians know this, but I didn't and thought I'd post it. Did you know that the biggest amateur racing club, the Sports Car Club of America, came from the original MG Car Club?

Hey Webb, that is indeed an interesting piece of trivia. I worked for the SCCA at Road America in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin years ago, and owned an MG at the time, but I must say that I had never heard that before. Thanks for posting it.

The SCCA was formed in 1944 when there were just a handfull of MG's in the US. I've never heard of any MG club connection and I'd be interested in knowing where you found this info.

It was in a book that is full of the history of all the car makes in the world. It's a massivly thick book called "Encyclopedia of the Car." I'll quote exactly what it says in the book:

"...although it was largely based on the 1939 TB, the TC helped start a book in sports cars and became something of a cult vehicle. Exports to the United States began early in 1947 and the influence was far-reaching because Detroit entered the same market five years later with the Chevrolet Corvette and, soon after that, the Ford Thunderbird. In fact, the Sports Car Club of America blossomed from one branch of the M.G. Car Club."

That implies just what you said, doesn't it? I wish they were a little more specific. By the early fifties MG's probably constituted the biggest single make in SCCA racing & rallying - maybe that's what they mean by "blossomed".

This is odd, Monday of this week I dropped a flyer into a guy a few streets away from me for our British Car Event in 10 days time. He's always had MG's in his yard and garage, but this was the first time I'd stopped and talked to him. One wall of his garage is full of plaques from his Solo events in his incredibly competitive GT. We talked a bit about the SCCA, and he said exactly the same thing... Did I know that the SCCA was born from an MG club? I did not! But I do now.

Well, I posted about this on the SCCA forum as well, and they didn't know either, but I did get the address of the SCCA archivist. I've printed a letter to him and it will go in the mail tomorrow. I'll post back here and there as soon as I get a response.
