So I'm driving along the other day and happen to see what looks like an older TD setting way back by this guys house for sale. So I go back to look at it and I hadn't looked to long, actully I went straight for the engine, something about the car puzzled me. I looked under the hood and nothing was there. At this point the owner comes out yelling at me and tells me to leave. SO I left and came back later with a friend and I dressed a little different. The owner didn't recognize me. Well it turned out to be a KIT car. It had a Volks Wagon engine in the back and it was an automatic, all fiber glass. If I had a chance to look at it before I would have realized it. So me and my buddy are talking to the owner about it. He tells us he wants $5000 OBO. He then asks my friend if he's gonna buy it. My friend said if he had the money( he was lying he would have never bought that). The owner then goes nuts again yelling we're wasting his time and walks away with his hands in the air. It was very tramatic experiance and it wasn't even a true MG......... Although it did have the MG badge.

too much for a kit car, and if it had been a real MG and he had been a real MG owner he would have been glad to let you look for as long as you wanted

That reminds me of that 'B on ebay that had a krauter engine and transaxle!! Like I would buy that?????

Sorry Chuck, but $5000 for a decent VW based TD isn't "too much". The market has them from $4000-$6000 depending on their quality, and the Ford or Chevette based machines are fetching much higher prices albeit dependant on build and chassis quality (nothing new there). One Ford-Based replica sold locally a couple of years ago for just over $10k, but it was a top notch show stopper.

I show my "fake" (although a true antique in it's own right) MG at local shows all the time and get asked the usual questions, including questions about the value. I usually respond $4k-$5k for my car "depending", I'm usually faced with responses like "that's all?"

As far as the "real MG owner" comment, I've met more than my fair share of MG owners that have had extraordinarily poor attitudes in many respects.

Regardless, sounds like this seller had an attitude worth staying away from - no matter how "genuine" his vehicle is.

I base my value on what I see these autos selling for. Right now there are 2 on ebay at under $2500, and I've seen them locally in that price range. Your car is probably allot nicer than these, I haven't seen it. I don't put down kit cars, modified cars, or their owners. I hang out mostly with B people, and with the exception of a very few ***holes, most will go out of their way to be helpful and are proud of their cars and will spend the day showing them to you and helping you with yours. In other words, like the people on this forum.
BTW, my B is currently undergoing enough modifications to be a kit car in it's own right
