Good Day to All:

We`ve had some Great Feedback on "License Plate Mania" & Some Really Great Pics of Plates thruout the US & Canada: It would be "Outstanding" to See What some of the "License Plates" in other parts of the World look like!! So; Please Post a Pic of Your LBC License Plate here for All to Enjoy!! With Thanx, Russ /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

I'm afraid that we don't have the option to make up our own licence plate seqences here in the UK. Here are some Triumphs showing the older style of plate.

There are a few ebay venders who can make custom international plates for $20 or so. You can see mine in the picture below.

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

Russ
I a 'Personal' plate. Base option is letters, dot, numbers, and this is also the cheapest option. Hence I have the 6 on the wrong side of the dot. To have TR6*74 is double the price, why I don't know!

Hey Craig; Thanx for Forwarding Your Plate from Australia: Theres No doubt that All will enjoy viewing Your Plate from down under! Kind of Interesting How the Gov`t can Manipulate the Cost of these Simple things! What does the "W.A." represent?

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

Russ,
The prices for old Triumphs are quite interesting. The cheapest you could pick up a complete wreck of a TR3 would be about ÂŁ3,500, which must be around $6,000. That would require new floors, sills, repairs to the inner wings, mechanical rebuild, re-trim and a re-spray. A runner would start at around ÂŁ6,000 and they go for about ÂŁ20,000 or more if they are concourse. Mine is an ex-USA car, so the steering wheel is on the wrong side. That affects the value, but having it in a rust-free condition more than makes up for it. Because I know the history from new and have had the car for 15 years, competing in various historic rallies, etc and because I have fitted an overdrive I would value mine at about ÂŁ10,000. It is a bit scruffy, but is rust-free and runs well.
Here's an example of a ÂŁ3,500 TR3.

TR6 values are very similar.
Spitfires are relatively common over here, so ÂŁ3,500 would buy a really good car.
I am always interested to see what Heralds sell for in the USA. I bought my Herald estate for ÂŁ265 and it passed its MOT (safety check). It could do with a re-paint, though. I suspect that Herald prices are higher in the USA because they are relatively rare there.
Craig - I wish I did have to worry about the sun fading my paint! It is actually lovely and sunny today, but I don't think there is any threat of damage occurring!!

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

Thought I would add to the thread.

'53 Standard Vanguard "OKF 3" and Tacoma the wonder dog

While I no longer own the car, when I sold it, it had personalized California plates that matched the British plates. I've been told that the plates were originally issued in the Liverpool area. The decal from the dealer indicated that it was sold in a suburb of Liverpool.

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

Standard, the company that bought Triumph after WWII. As in Standard-Triumph. And why some pre-war Triumph people call post-war Triumphs, not 'true' Triumphs.

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

The Triumph TR2 was built with "off the shelf" parts from the Vanguard. Many of the parts for the TR3 are also compatable.

I was going to put a TR2 manifold on my Vanguard to get a bit more power (same engine), but it was not to be...

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

Russ,
A good TR4A will sell for around ÂŁ10,000 - about $20,000 and you could add about 20% to that from a dealer.
The eBay Herald would be lucky to reach ÂŁ1,000 over here. I suspect it would more likely sell for aound ÂŁ600. It looks quite rough! You should check out eBay UK and look at Heralds under completed items. It seems to be mostly very scruffy cars that are sold on eBay, but it gives you an idea of the prices they sell for.

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

Hi Russ
I finally got a chance to photograph the license plate on the Herald.
All of our "civilian" plates are yellow. The Hebrew on the plate states that my car is registered as a collectors vehicle. Once a car is declared to be a collectors item, the annual registration fee and insurance drop to 1/4 the normal cost. The only downside is that the car can't be used between 7 and 9 am (since it is not a "daily driver" anymore.)

There is no choice as to what number you get, and the number stays with the car for life. The really old cars only had 5 digit numbers. Obviously, this scheme didn't last for to long before they ran out. When the local antique car club was created, any car old enough to join had a 5 digit plate, so the club became the "5-club"
The 6 digit plates also ran out after a while. Now we are up to 7 digit plates.
We also have Red plates - police, black plate - army, White plates - diplomats and a very few limos with blue plates and NO numbers - Those limo's are always accompanied by LOTS of marked and unmarked escorts with all sorts of strange antennas!
Yisrael

Really, Nick? I'm surprised; I'd have thought that, as a genuine convertible, it would bring more in the UK. I don't think it's as bad as some of the pictures might make it look. (DISCLAIMER: No financial interest, and I have NOT seen the car in person.)

Yes, though, from what I've seen on eBay, most UK Heralds listed there are likely to be projects or even (gasp!) spares cars. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif And, of course, the vast majority are saloons. Proportionally, convertible Heralds are far more common in the US, and saloon versions -- while scarce -- struggle to approach acceptance or fair value!

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

Hi Nick, Harold & 70herald;

I just looked at ebay.co.uk @ the Heralds for sale: Man; There sure are a Lot of them Available! Your right Harold; They do mostly look like Projects:

Interesting; Not too many TR4`s listed! What`s that mean Nick; Scarce in the UK or really in Demand?

Hi there 70herald from NE PA USA: Thanx for the Pic of Your Plate; Really looks neat: Who would I have to Kill to get one like that or a similar one? I`m something of a "License Plate Collector"!

Thanx, Russ

Re: "INTERNATIONAL" License Mania: Please Send Pi

Russ,
I think it is all down to numbers.
I am not sure of the exact figures, but something around 80% of all TRs built were sold to the USA. If you imagine the number exported to other countries too, that probably meant that less than 10% stayed in the UK. so maybe about 5,000 TR4 and 4As were sold in the UK.
There were more than half a million Heralds produced and I would imagine that about half of those were sold in the UK. I know that TRs probably survived better than Heralds as they are more cherished, but that still is a big difference. I wonder how many Heralds were sold in the USA?
There must be a very high proportion of TRs here in the UK that have been re-imported from the USA. Certainly in the late 80s and early 90s they were coming back by the container-load and we were all clambering for "rust-free" imports. That must have evened the prices up a bit. I guess the price difference in the 80s would have been a lot more than it is now.
It's interesting and I would like to know more. I will just have a quick look at Michael cook's book to see if I can learn more.
