Intermittent Wipers [the bad kind]

Folks, my 74 Midget has been toying with me. The wipers work when it is dry, and when the rain starts. But, they stop working when the rain gets pretty strong. Fan also stops. This is a little bit inconvenient. I am about to replace the seal between the windshield and the cowl, because I notice moisture on the metal just inside the windshield during the heavy rain. I am thinking that maybe the moisture might be going behind the dash, dripping down and shorting the wiper and fan switch wires. Do you think that getting the new seal squared away will solve this? Or are there any other ideas about the wiper problem?

PS, we are generally unfamiliar with rain in Albuquerque /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif.

Midgey, first let me welcome you here. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I.
Your idea regarding the windscreen frame/cowl seal is a good one. I have had the same thing happen to me, and the new frame seal fixed it. I was actually having water drip on my leg!
One other thing to check is the grommet where the wires come through the firewall. There could be some minor chafing there that would cause the problem.
You may be unfamilar with rain in ABQ, but from what I remember, when it did rain, it poured!
Good luck,
Jeff

i know about that, but have never had an electrical issue due to that.....yet. My seal is also new.

Midgey, Welcome to the bestBritish Car forum on the web. Great place to learn.

Midgey, I should also have mentioned checking the connections at both the wiper motor and the blower motor. Sometimes I get ahead of myself and take things for granted.
The one where I had the seal issue was a '63, with totally different switches. I would bet it is more of a connection issue on the '74.
