TR4/4A Interior door handles and escutcheons

So I am finishing up the interior of my 1966 TR4A and I mounted the new interior door trim panels, put on the interior door handles with the springs behind the escutcheons and I get a good 1/4" gap between the edge of the escutcheons and the door panel. Is that the way it should be? I can easily see the spring and it just looks wrong to me. Any comments would be appreciated.

Do you have a photo of the issue? The springs go behind the window winder. (The big side towards the panel, some folks hold them in place with tape to facilitate install).

if I recall when I assembled my door nearly a year ago, as long as the door is flat, the panel confirms nicely. Everything is a bit “wonky” during assembly: the springs don’t want to stay put, you have to align the panel clips with the holes in the door, and the window winder handle pin installation is tricky. I swore more than a few times - especially when you have to go back and redo something for one reason or another.
 
I got the springs in OK it's just they look funny to me. Photo attached.

Thanks for the help guys, I never picked up on the springs being under the panels from the exploded parts plates.
 
Quick tip from the MD, step on the spring so that it doesn't push too hard on the panel.
Also from the school of hard Knocks, take the plastic the panel came in and use it to line
the backside to make it water proof!!
