Ahh, I see you found My Link on the racing forum.

The #44 MGB is one of the semi-factory racers from Group 44. The drivers back then for Group 44 were Bob Tullius, Brian Furstenau, Jerry Truitt, Logan Blackburn.

If you look carefully, it looks like it says "Brian Furstenau" on the door of that car.

Also: if you look through those photos on the link you'll see the #41 Bugeye driven by Randy Canfield. Randy was (as is still) a National SCCA champ racer. That car was wrecked at the Nationals years ago, but has been replaced by an identical car. I don't know the driver of the #41 TR6.

The #29 Bugeye on that link (somewhere) is Jim Harrison (he now races a Miata).

These are some of my old shots from back in the day.

That's all I got.

Nial- I got that link from an East Coast friend who goes to the races and drives on the track for Porsche days.
He's ay Watkins Glen this week end
Pretty funny that is your link

Hey Don, one of my oldest friends and his son are both driving instructors. Not sure if they're at the Glen this weekend tho.

I was just at Watkins Glen three weeks ago....figured I would stop and look around on my trip out to collect my daughter from college.

I had NO IDEA it was in the middle of nowhere. I mean...nowhere.

How on earth do they host a Nascar event? Where does everybody stay?

...and why to they call it Watkins Glen when the whole thing is on top of a hill?

For some reason Randy, this comes to mind

Yep. The middle of nowhere. It's there because Cam Argetsinger lived in the area. He's one of the guys that got road racing doing in the US.

The crowds for NASCAR are actually smaller than the people that show up for the wine tours in the Fall. There are a decent amount of hotels in the Horseheads area and plenty of smaller motels and B&B type places closer to Watkins Glen.

Watkins Glen is named after a gorge that runs through the middle of the town (glen = gorge). At some point it was on property owned by the Watkins family.
The race track ran right through the town of Watkins Glen until several unfortunate accidents (one killed racer Sam Collier and another killed a young boy). After that it was moved to vacant farmland up on the hill.

Thanks for the details!

My daughter is at Cornell....so I know the Horseheads area / Ithaca area a bit. But Watkins Glen...NASCAR? Really. I was amazed.

Elkhart Lake, WI is remote by definition...but Watkins Glen is farm field stuff....amazing.

I love Bill Cosby... I have heard him speak at least 6 times and met him personally twice. While I doubt he recalls me, I remember him well. Smart man....on many fronts.

Met him twice in the 70's myself

When F-1 was still at the Glen we were young enough to sleep beside our cars in the various marque's "corrals". No need for creature comforts. Sleeping bags, a tent if it really started raining...

We were at the Glen last night. The town and the track are really two different entities. The track is actually in the town of Dix. The Village of Watkins, like Nial said, is down in the valley at the south end of Seneca Lake.
We were on my parents boat last night for the waterfront festival. around 9 pm lots of the boats in the harbor had run Christmas lights up the masts, and many of the buildings and piers projected lights and such on their walls. a few of the sail boats had sails up (Wind was calm) and had them lit up with colored lights. The Schooner Malabar had its sails up and has designs moving around on them.
There were at least 3 bands, and lots of vendors.... It was really neat
today is the Cardboard Boat Regatta. It's a huge event. boats made entirely of cardboard and duct tape, any where from 1-2 people to some that will hold 40 people.
Quite a fun thing to see.
