TR4/4A Interesting Tranny problem

Fixed a tranny for someone a couple of years ago and got a call from him saying that when the car is sitting still he can go through all the gears including reverse. But once the car is in motion going from 2nd to third is like hitting a brick wall. Tried to skip 3rd and go into 4th and the same thing. Also can't get into reverse from time to time. I suppose with the engine running and sitting still.
All the detente balls and springs were replaced. I polished the main shaft and bushings and everything slid very nicely He probably has a couple thousand miles on it. Did complain once that decelerating there was some noise. Told him to change the gear oil to Red Line GL4 but he used regular 90 weight he said it's better. Any ideas what could be going on here?

Sounds like an issue with the little lockout ball in the shifter cover, between the shift rods, that acts to prevent shifting into 2 gears at once. Maybe it is sticking so can't shuttle back and forth like it should?

The gear lever that came with my new OD transmission is difficult to move into some gears positions. Transmission is not n the car yet. I am not going to use this cap on my car.
I noticed that the inner cap is catching on the outer cover as you try to move into some gear positions. In the photo you can see the wear on the outer cover. Could this be the issue?

Had one guy that said the end play on the main shaft is too loose? Not sure how that would work. I don't think the shaft moves but the steel bushings/washers were measured and replaced.

GL4 yes. His 90 wght is covering something if it is better. Might be a slider out of align.

End play would allow the shifter to move, but not fully engage the gear. So not likely your problem. Could be a jammed 3/4 slider...but that would be rare. My money is still in the top cover.

Just got a call from the guy. Took the detent out of 3/4 gear shaft and was deformed and believes it was jamming. Had him switch covers and all seems well now. However he got another problem where his oil pressure is staying at 60lb no matter what RPM.

My hot oil pressure is 50psi hot idle 800rpm,max 75 at speed.13k on rebuild.
Is 60 psi a problem?

He is concerned that something happened after he drove home in 2nd gear for 30 miles at 3k. I told him I've driven my TR3 for over 2 hours at 60 mph and 3200 rpms and never missed a beat. But his registered correctly at idle 20lb and driving at 60lb. He is going to change the oil and told him to add a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil and if anything is gummed up that might clear it up. Then if that doesn't work replace the oil pressure spring.
