I am just starting to take a good look at my 74.5 B and have noticed this interesting modification to the radiator. Any ideas what this is for??

Originally the spacers were 1/4" wood. That appears to be a DPO fix for a different fan/waterpump setup than original.

I see both a board and a chain. Maybe someone lost a dog.

There appears to be some other DPO's in that photo...look at the radiator duct panel...there should be a fiberboard lower air duct panel between it & the radiator...

& I hope you knew Doc was funnin'...yes, there was a tiny spacer between the radiator & its support - about 1/8" piece of fiber that had 3 holes in it to fit over the 3 bolts holding the radator to its support panel.Methinks somebody was concerned about the fan hitting the rad so moved the rad forward.

Is the "snoot" on the later waterpumps longer? IOW (In Other Words): is it possible a DPO put the wrong (newer) WP on the engine, then "extended" the clearance with those GIANT toothpicks?

Could be, Doc - MG's had both a "long neck" & a "short neck" water pump.....for whatever reason, that's a new DPO to me!

"Aww, poop! Well, I guess I'll just pop down th' LUMBER YARD an' pick out a nice 2x4... DOn't wanna go thru changin' that pump thing twice."

I'm kinda surprised there's no "outie" dent in the bonnet from the rad cap.

Treated lumber will last longer in that application.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Early water pumps were longer than later ones, but they are not interchangable without significant modification. I'm thinking someone either wanted to fit a bigger, incorrect fan or didn't know anything about how fans work.

I'm worried about termites....

Thanks for the infor. It looks as if everything would clear the radiator if it was returned to original spec. As for the bonnet, there is a large dent in front but apparently that was a result of a previous owner backing another car into it. Still, the car came with a brand new replacement bonnet so I am good there.

Looks like this actually belongs in the DPO legacy thread. Bless their hearts this is what makes our hobby interesting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif
