Interesting new engine!

I certainly wasn't expecting that! Neat concept!
 
Neat design, unfortunately, it is going to cost a fortune to manufacture the parts needed for it. 5-axis milling is going to be way more expensive than boring a straight hole even if it eliminates allot of part.
No information on the thermodynamic efficiency but since they say it is a 4 cycle design, I don't see how it could significantly improve the efficiency.

Here is another new design which solve some of the thermodynamics problems and keeps normal pistons so the actual machining bit shouldn't be to much more complicated than a conventional engine. Still I think that it will be very difficult to get any of these new designs into production.

That's a neat design too, but it nearly doubles the foot print of a conventional 4 cycle engine.

The first one could be done with cast molds and such and then hardened machined parts for the wear surfaces to bring costs down. Though, hard numbers to prove it's claims would be nice. I realize they have a dyno sheet on their site, bu tit's too small to make out any details.
 
IMO, first one looks like an over-engineered swash plate, not much "bang" for th' buck as an engine, second is a "push-me-pull-you" with twice as much gear (mass and complexity) as what we're runnin' NOW.

It ain't the reciprocating-to-rotary conversion wot's at issue, it's th' FUEL...

...and our insane desire to drive around in our LIVING ROOMS just to get th' groceries or take junior to school. :madder:
 
neat stuff. here's a facinating article I recently saw in the trade magazine Motor age
It talks about 2 new designs that I could see being implemented in the near future. Especially the oil pressure controlled variable displacement engine (modified atkins cycle). Manufacturers are already using a different version of this with thier variable valve timing. Piston stroke control is the logical next step.
 
Ah something new to replace the dinosaurs under the hoods of our cars, just like the Wankel did.

Here's my low tech ride. It's a 1963 Lambretta TV175... I've owned it for 40 years. Bought it when I started college in 1969.
It still runs great, has NEVER left me on the side of the road, and has 14,000 miles on the clock. I'm just breaking it in :laugh:
 
Hi Elliot! That reminds me of when I was in the Navy stationed at Gitmo. I had a Vespa that I rode everywhere. I would even run it out on the flight line at times. Until the old man found out. Won't get into that. Seems like it would run forever on a tank of gas. Always started and it also never failed me. It's great that you kept the Lambretta, It looks like new and probably brings back some nice memories.
 
I have fond memories of driving it out to the airport (Peter O'Knight) to take flying lessons during college. The only thing I missed is not having a back seat. :devilgrin:

I went out to Davis Island a couple months ago for a British car show at the airfield. Hadn't been over there in years. Ya wouldn't recognize th' place Elliot.
 
Thanks for the update Doc... I miss Davis Island. To think that I used to ride my Lammy over there and it's still kicking!

yeah... I hear that! For the time being Ethanol is what we're stuck with for an alternative...

As an aside, I finally saw when of them Tesla cars running around Culver City not too long ago. Looked like a stretched Elise going by but lacking the sweet vroom vroom sound...
