So does it go with the metal side to the head or to the manifolds ?

I followed what was there when I bought the car. Mine was metal to the manifold, not sure if it was right though.

Well I made it an easier decision . Got a new gasket today and its metal both sides .
Guess it depends on who does the repro gasket as to how its made .
 
I can't say positively how it goes, but it's a lot easier to scrape fibre gasket remains off the (3) manifolds than it is from the head face__with all the studs in the way.

I still do my work thinking that I might be the next guy that has to take something apart...
