I'm pricing insurance for my TR3.

What are you paying and for what kind of coverage?
Whats a good source for reasonable cost? (clubs, etc.)

Hi Duke,

This type of question has come up a ton of times but your relatively new here so here`s who I`ve been with forever.

"CONDON & SKELLEY" - 1-800-624-4688:

Coverages for "Antique Cars" such as the TR3 are typ. everything; Comprehensive & Collision: What is important is that you get an "Agreed Upon Value" of the car! So; If it should get "Totaled", "Stolen" or whatever; The Ins. Co. pays you back in Full for that "Agreed Upon Value" between You and the Ins. Co.

Have pics ready. All 4 sides, Int. & Engine Bay. Typ. must be an "Un-Molested" / "Un-Modified" car.

The phone call is "Free" so what the heck.

Have Fun,

Russ

I carry full coverage on my TR4 with an agreed value of $12,000 for about $80 per year with American Family. No limit on miles driven.

Hagerty, $100/300, $300 towing, no mileage limitation, $8,500 assigned value. Like $110/year

Caveats:

No one under 25 drives her, must be kept in a locked garage.

Super friendly service.

American Collector, enclosed garage, mileage limit, no one with less than 10 years driving experience, photos and approx. receipts, complete coverage, $27,500 value - just over $200 annually.

:iagree: and the top level towing package covers all of your daily cars, not just the LBC.

I just had a problem with someone hitting my car and Hagerty came through big time for me. I was amazed with the service and attitude. And I was paid in full in two weeks. AAAAAA++++++++++ in my book.

I just talked to Haggerty and they are one of the very few that can write the $500K liability that I carry with my Umbrella policy for my house and cars. All the others said.....Oh, you're in Connecticut....that's a problem. Most will only go to $300K. With an agreed to value, no mileage limitations and it can't be used as a daily driver, it was $220/year. After hearing about Paul's wonderful experience, I figured they were worth another call.

Have done some searching through the suggested insurers. None of them want to insure a guy who answers the question, "Are you going to drive it to work?" "Yes." Antique car insurance appears meant to be "show car" insurance with a little flexibility, perhaps, but not for the daily driver.

I won't drive it in the salt of Minnesota Winter. But, after the roads clear, I intend to drive it to work, the store -- anywhere/time I want to; and I know I'm going to want to.

I currently (so I can drive it) have added it (liability only) to my existing car policy -- not especially cheap, but I'm just going to remove it from the policy when the snow comes so, not too bad either, I guess.

Any pointers for me, from you more experienced TR insureds?

Moseso, I'd suggest to get on the web and shop your vehicle insurance until you drop. Google "antique vehicle insurance" or something similar and get quotes from several.

It pays to shop your insurance. Premiums may vary significantly for the same coverage from insurer to insurer.

The ones indicated above, Hagerty, etc., are all good ones.

Good luck, let us know . . .

Moseso..........the take it to work question is always the killer....along with take it to golf course, mall, grocery store etc. For that reason I always kept my car with my primary insurance company under my umbrella policy. The downside is they don't do "agreed to" value. Only "declared" value. So if you have an accident, you'll have tp prove your car is worth more then the book value.

A few weeks ago I had a long conversation with Haggerty about what's allowed driving-wise. I asked.... if we're out for a Sunday drive and stop for dinner and then the grocery store....is that allowed? Yes....we just don't want you using the car as your daily driver. Can I go for a drive and stop for lunch at the golf course..........is that allowed? Yes....we just don't want you using the car as your daily driver. So they're pretty much saying you can drive the car as much as you want but it can't be used as a daily driver. Taking it to work would probably be a deal breaker if the car got damaged in the parking lot. But, I'm retired.....I don't go to work anymore! :yesnod:

I asked Hagerty if I drove the car to work a few times a year if that would void the coverage. They replied it is not to be a daily driver.

I had to show that I have a primary use vehicle and list every licenced driver and list their primary use vehicle living in my household. They did exclude my wife from driving the car....too many speeding tickets I think

i haven't driven much but to work some and this year just had liability under state farm w/ the rest of the stuff for $70 6 months. easier less mess. $120 for tow and all but still unsure of value. i should look at hagerty. i should not hit stuff.

Insurance is an expense that is annoying UNTIL you have a problem and need to be paid for a claim. If you go with any company, collector or not, make sure that you have a written guarantee as to what you will be paid if you are involved in an accident. It is a well established fact that you will get better results and payment for a classic with collector insurances.

Agreed collector insurance amounts for totals far exceeds Blue Book value of a 30 plus year old car with wear and tear considered that gives you next to nothing for your non replaceable vehicle. Find out what shop rate they are willing to pay and if you have the right to choose your own shop and if they will pay the rates to repair a collector car to the standards that you will expect.

Some may consider their cars daily drivers, but you can have a yearly allowance that you may not exceed if you don't drive in the winter months. Investigate that closely.

What I'm saying is that you may be very disappointed in what you get if you do not investigate those questions up front. And don't stop taking pictures every time you improve something. You all know how I know this to be true and well worth the effort.
