No Dave, there has always been an additional seal under the bezel I do not know if it was restricted to certain models of the car or not.and I do not know what the original material was they used in this application.Sometimes to get the glass to release from the bezel it requires a short soak in gasoline.---Keoke

Referring to my pic attached to the last post, exactly what & where. I think I have most of the parts named. Do you mean between the chrome ring & the front of the glass? If so, I can see no earthly reason for it. Don't give up, I'll get it through my thick head sooner or later.

Yep Dave, thats where the Gunk exists on black bezeled guages,between your chrome ring and the front of the glass, required or not.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
Hi Dave,
I took apart an old tack I had laying on the living room floor (I’m not married). Though a Smith’s gauge, it allegedly came from an MGB. Here’s the gunk I found under the chrome ring.

Dave, nice picture. Where and what I'm referring to isn't on your drawing. As I mentioned above, the Smiths/Jaeger instruments I've worked on have included an additional part, a reverse cup reflector/diffuser behind the glass and in front of the gauge face. That's where I've seen the square seal you're talking about but in my experience they've always been a fiber material not an elastomer.

Look at the bottom, left picture on page 3. The diffuser is shown to the right of the removed chrome bezel.

Admittedly I haven't worked on many instruments built prior to 1960. It could be that as Dave shows in his drawing this diffuser wasn't used in the 1950s. This could be why we're talking at cross purposes.

Ed_K, I'm not suggesting the goo between the chrome and glass was ever fiberous. I'm not sure what form that substance used to be. The fiber material I'm referring to would have been on the other side of the glass.

Yup, the inside of my bezels look the same except more of the black stuff has fallen out. After thinking about it more, I bet they used a strip chaulk, aka Dum Dum putty to keep the glass from rattling on the glass. 3M still makes the stuff and I've got some of it left over from sealing the shrouds.

It was a case of "apples & oranges". I now understand what the discussion is about. Apparently there were "improvements" on the later gages. Thanks for enlightening me.

The black residue was both inside and outside my temp/oil gauge glass. After taking it apart and cleaning out the mess, the space has to be taken up with something to prevent the glass from moving around under the chrome ring. I didn't have anything on hand but RTV, so that is what I used. I only put it on the outside of the glass under the ring to take up the space left by the now missing goo. I wasn't certain what was supposed to be there as it was all turned into
a tar substance..... This was before I joined this forum, or I would have asked you all what it was supposed to be before using the universal substitue gasket material in a tube!

Confidentially, I don't think that the newer gages were an improvement.

Doug that was an excellent article you wrote ! I think we should ask Basil to put it in the technical reference section of the BCF so your work is never lost, ( with your permission of course ). If I ever have any problem with my tach, I know who I will seek out for advice If I can't figure it out !

To all. Any documents I post at the web address above are free to anyone who wants or needs them. They are freely available. I'm not much of a "knowledge base" person. They've tried to get us doing that at work and I'm not very good at it. However, the PDF is in my storage area if anyone would like to transcribe it or move it to the knowledge base.

It didn't work. Got a rejection message for the email that I sent saying " This address no longer accepts mail." It was returned from webmaster@britishcarforum.com
The BCF think's it was /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/spam.gif ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
