installing motor

would it help with my install if the rear of the car was on ramps? also can a speedometer cable be installed with motor in?........zimmy

I usually have the rear on the ground and the front on jack stands to help with the angle that the engine and tranny have to go in at. The speedo cable can be hooked up anytime, but it is a little easier to do on the way in. The slave cylinder is a lot easier to bolt up when the tranny is 3/4 the way in as well.

I don't understand how having the front up helps.

me neither trevor,...it sure didnt make gettng it out any easier.....had to lift it higher......
i was thinking raising the back would give a better view and angle for install...then raise the front for any connnections ,etc..........z

Tractor Supply Co. (TSC) used to sell those engine tilting devices for about $35. I would think that raising the rear of the car would help.

I have found that if I use an engine hoist, then I need to have jack stands under the front for the clearance. If I am manually lifting it, then I keep it down nice and low, tie a rope around the tranny and have some one give it a pull through the tunnel. It is far safer then sticking your hand in there.

OK, I still don't understand. I've always installed it with the car on the wheels. Where do you gain clearance by raising the front of the car?

You don't, I think he is saying you just get a better angle.

But the engine/trans has to be tilted back. If the car is already tilted back, then you have to tilt the engine/trans more. Right?

Everyone does it differently I guess. I put stands under the A arms because my engine hoist has the same track width as the car. When I pick the engine and tranny combination I set the chains so it is close to the angle of the car. As it is going in I need to pull the engine forward just a bit to get the tail of the tranny below the heater box, then I lower the hoist as I push it forward and it slides right in the tunnel. Just before it is all the way in I reach in the tunnel through the shifter opening and line the drive shaft up with the tranny, push the engine in a little more and lower it onto the mounts. I'm sure others do it differently but that works for me.

I was just wanting more explanation in case I was doing the hard way. Thanks.

I used two heavy duty rachet style tie-down straps. One strap went under the front of the engine, the other under the tran. In this way I was able to start out at a steep angle, then decrease it as I progressed. I had front and back up on stands and had no problems clearing the front of the car with the Blue Bird hoist I rented. Also, I had to crawl under the car alot during the process to get everything hooked up.

my friend is bringing his truck with a lift on the back corner....im VERY thankful.....ill let u know how it goes in a few hours ; ) ....zzzimmmy
