TR2/3/3A Installing gas tank

I am at the half way point doing a total restoration of my 1954 TR-2 long Door. I am trying to get the gas tank back in but, after I install the rubber sleeve and hex head, with clamps. I can't get the tank back in? It hits on the hex collar in the rubber sleeve. There is not enough flexibility in the sleeve to cram it back in??

Your thoughts old mighty Guru's? I am sure Randall knows how to do it; don't you?

Sure. Cut down the sleeve so it fits almost entirely onto the tank neck. It only needs to be about 1 inch, plus whatever gap there is between the tank and filler on the scuttle. Mount the filler first. Slide the sleeve onto the tank neck all the way, and put the two clamps over it loosely. Put the tank in position, slide the sleeve up and clamp it.

If you ruin the first one (cut it too short or whatever), your local NAPA should be able to sell you a replacement.

If you have my luck, you will get to remove and re-install it another 4-5 times, so you can do it blind folded!
