installation of distributor

Hi all
I have a 1976 triumph spitfire that I am installing a flame thrower pertronix distributor in to. When I took my old 1 out I made sure the rotor was pointing at the number 1 cylinder . When I try to install the new 1 it's 180 degrees off the driving dog won't line up in the proper position. Not sure what to do here?

You maybe remember I was trying to install an ignitor in my old distributor but found out I could not. I ordered a new distributor and coil as I wanted to switch away from points.

Dan,

Can you remove the drive on the bottome of the dizzy. If you can you might be able to turn it 180...

The other possibility is to pull the drive out of the oil pump and drop it back in turned 180....

Sounds like your new distributor has it's drive dog installed 180 degrees away from the old one. I don't have a Spitfire book handy, but there might be enough information in there to figure out which one is "right".

There are several ways you can deal with the problem. Probably the best is to remove the distributor pedestal (121530 below) and "re-clock" the drive gear (104860).

Two choices:

#1 put it in the way it fits and move the spark plug wires 180 degrees.

#2 pull the drive gear out (104860 above) and put it back in 180 degrees from where it was.

Either way it should work fine.

I vote #2. Sure, #1 is quicker, but it's going to drive someone crazy in the future! :wall:

3rd choice. Look back at Randall's first post. I believe you will find it is possible to support the dizzy drive dog over the jaws of a vice and tap the roll pin out. Rotate the dog 180 then put the pin back in. That way you will be able to put your old dizzy back in if you change your mind.

However, if you are planning on keeping the car forever, moving the plug wires is quick and easy.

for now i moved the plug wires 180 also. car runs great... best ever since i have had it. for now its a good short term solution in the future i will probably pull the dizzy back out and rotate the driving dog on the bottom. thanks guys!
