Insane quote for a paint job

So I've been trying to get a quote back for respraying the TVR.

It's had all of the glass fibre work done on the body, which is off the frame and it's already in primer. It needs a small amount of work on the hood to fix a couple of 1" stress cracks, and to glass in the remade frame to allow it to open and close - not really a big deal at all.

Single color paint, nothing fancy.

Wait for it:

They want $12,000...

For a car that'll be worth 12k on a good day. That's crazy. I need to move somewhere else, where the cost of living is lower.

SHEESH! And I thought a little less than half that was steep for mine, including stripping and a complete color change!

I think Tennessee's calling you, Mate! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

At that price I could have it trailered to Tn, painted and trailered back for less.

Did you go to a guy in Briarcliff Manor by chance?

Sounds to me they did not want the job so they high balled it. Happens all the time.

No Nyack. I figured that side of the river would be less expensive. Silly me.

AFAIK, the only place that does classics in Briarcliff (which is where I lived up until June) only does mechanical work, not paint and body. He's also busy all the time...

I figure, as was said, they high balled it but then again a simple "we're not interested" would have worked far better...

It is Bob Millstien?

The one in Briarcliff - yes. He's more into Jags and Swedish stuff than Rumfs though.

Geeze for $12,000.00 you could buy the best compressor and paint gun money can buy, All of the primer, sandpaper, thinner, stirr sticks, strainers, masking tape & paper, and paint you will EVER need in your lifetime. And even errect some sort of temporary paint booth in your backyard.
Sounds to me like it`s time to learn how to spray a car.
OR ..... do some more shopping around.
Recently I went to a local HIGHLY recomended body shop to get estimates for some very minor ding removal. I told the body man he could take his time I wasn`t in a hurry for the car.
Nor was I concerned with the price and that I was looking for show quality work and would even give him credit on the work if I won any shows or was asked whom did the body work.
I can`t believe his reply, He said " I only do collision damage no thanks"
I guess shops are getting picky about what when and who they do repairs for these days.

That’s completely normal for body-shops these days.

A volume shop can hang a new fender and spray it in a couple shop-hours and charge an insurance company a thousand bucks.

They have no interest in spending dozens of shop-hours prepping and painting whole cars for a couple grand. Nor do they have any interest in having your car sit in their shop taking up space that could be used to get insurance jobs out the door.

You need to find a painter who wants to paint whole cars. Unless there’s a lot of competition in the area they won’t be cheap.

PC.

Alana, there's a guy upstate, between Rochester and Syracuse, that has a small shop. I had him spray the underside of my 3000 because the undercoating was removed. The work was fine and he showed me some examples of his work.

I asked him what it would cost for a rotisserie paintjob on the 3000, he said about $5,000.

I'll look for his name and number, if you're interested.

The guy that does my body and paint work can only be found by word of mouth. He doesn't advertise, works out of his own shop up one of the canyons around here. He's PPG factory finish certified, does incredible work and is priced very reasonably (he has practically zero overhead). He is also constantly busy. You usually have to schedule time with him three to four months in advance. Seen everything from custom cycle frames to Rolls-Royce's and Lamborghini's. He is also very well versed with classic Porsche's.

I'm sure there is someone in your area that is similar. The real hard part is finding them. Start bugging hot rodders and other car culture folks about who does their stuff.

The shops that advertise in the yellow pages generally only want to look at insurance work because they consider full resto work a royal PITA. The customers more than the work. Being held to a higher standard of work is evidently less profitable than the typical insurance claim customer.

Alan, did you get ahold of my friend here in Horseheads? I can Pm you his # if you want. He does excellent work, and tends to only do hot rods, race cars and classics. He's a very good "glass" man to boot.

I still have his contact info. I was hoping for something closer, but it doesn't seem to be working out as I'd have wished.

I might have to buy a trailer anyway to move the Rumf, so if that works out then a drive up there just turns into time and gas money.

Small world. I have a stack of reciepts from my moms jag. WHOOOOLE LOTTA MONEY!.

The price for a rotisserie spray 3000 AH in upper NC is around $6,000. At a $12,000 estimate, the guy just doesn't want the job! Around here it'll cost between 2 to 4 thousand for an MGB. That's a striped body, inside and out.

Never thought Auto Body and Medicine would succumb to the same villain...the insurance industry!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

Almost seems worth it to get a U-haul and bring it somewhere esle to have sprayed. You don't get the benefit of taking pics and checking up on the car but still...

Cost of uhaul
Round trip in time & gas

If it'll cost you half price seems worth it to ship it south.

A great deal of it stems from legislation and litigation, IMO.

Insurance is the "middleman" in the equation. Guaranteed income from both ends.
