Inner Tie-rod

Has anyone ever successfully repaired an inner tie-rod on a late model rack?

I have one that has a bit of play, and I would like to attempt to repair it with shims. By looking at the parts tear-down, it looks possible. It's fine by me if this is a temporary fix. I will buy new parts at a time when it won't cause my wife to kill me.

Also, does anyone have any tips for removing the inner tie-rod?
