inlet manifold

Hi

I’ve posted this in all the forums regardless of the car, as I’m hoping someone somewhere may have tucked away in their shed or garage, an inlet manifold to couple a Weber 48ida carburettor to an A-series engine, (for a Mini) Or you know of someone who might have one. These are incredibly hard to get hold of, and when they do come up for sale, it’s with a carburettor as well. I only need the inlet manifold though.

I’ve tried all the mini shops I know, and just about every other car spares shop, and still no luck.

Thanks for taking the time to read this

Hello Don,
I'm not familiar with the IDA, is it a downdraught? Twin choke?
have you considered making one? You can buy 90 degree bends from various engineering suppliers and would only need some flanges welded on.
However, what is wrong with the excellent and reliable S.U. carburettor?

Don't think you're gonna find an IDA for a 4-cylinder engine...they're mainly used on V engines - V8, v6, etc...won't work on your engine......this month's issue of "MG Enthusiast Magazine" has a whole dissertation on the various Weber carbs & their pplications.

That would really be my question... why an IDA? There's any number of other webers that would probably be better suited to the application.

For that matter, if you're going to get out in the stratosphere anyway, look at motorcycle carbs. They're doing really cool stuff with 'em, and they're dirt cheap on ebay. Course, you'll still need a manifold, but sell the ida, and start with something more suited to the A-series.

Unless there's more to this story.

IDA is a large downdraft carb, the only trouble with making an inlet manifold, is the a-series head is a real pig for flow, so its not something you can do without test benches and a lot of know how.

It can be fitted to an a-series (high end, nearly race spec units to get the most out of it) and the results have been very good, only now bettered by aftermarket fuel injection.

And last of all, most other Weber’s on a mini require a air box to be welded into the dash area to allow for the length of the inlet manifolds and ram pipes, which in my case is just not feasible, (drivers seat is now in the middle, and yes I know die hard classic car folks will moan about altering the car, but its mine and I done it just because I knew I could and everyone else said it couldn’t be done.)

As for bike carbs and stuff like that, I could go the route of fuel injection now a decent setup using throttle bodies has been made for a mini, but the nearest place to get it remapped, is nearly 200 miles from me, which is just not practical, in the event something needs altering, or goes wrong.

As for su’s I just personally don't like them. I have them on a-series engines before and I’ve also had webers. The webers you just forget its even there and it always works a treat, but su’s need tending, and regular attention to keep running well.
