Initial/total advance settings

Tomorrow morning I'm hopefully completing installation of a Mallory Unilite distributor in my wife's 3000 MK I--I'm using the model with vacuum advance. The literature says that the unit as set from the factory has 24 degrees of advance--the springs can be changed to get up to 28 degrees I believe so I guess they are referring to centifugal?

The engine (cam, carbs, etc.) is stock as far as I know. What should the initial/ idle advance be and what should the total be and at revs. Should the timing be set with vacuum tube attached or capped off?

michael, yesterday i put in a new dist. cap wires plugs and rotor,it got too late to do anymore to check the timing on my bj7, the book says to do the initial timing with the vac. line removed from the manifold but does not mention capping it off.hope to have some time today to go on fidlin. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

IF you have the 25D6 distributor static is set a 10 Deg BTDC at 600 RPM Ray.---Keoke

I completed the installation today--car runs very well.

Timing is set to total of about 35 degrees of advance at high rpms.

Picture of the Mallory Unilite, ballast coil and new wires attached. It IS red!

It sure is. Good thing you have the same on your red car. Color coordinated? Guess I could paint my black cap.

Well Michael, it’s obvious that you need to move the red wires to your car (with two spare wires in the Tupperware under the spare tire). Then buy a set of Jacobs wires to match the blue of your wife’s car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

OH that looks good Michael, glad she runs ok.At Idle 600 -to-800 RPM with the vac disconnected [don't have to cap it off] you should see/set 15 Deg of advance on a timing lite. I think a total of 32 Deg advance is about right. If the engine does not like your present settings it will get hot to tell you so.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
