Inguiry/question--placement of decal

Greetings, all,

This is my first post as a new member. I have a Healey blue 65 BJ8 that I maintain and drive a couple of thousand miles each year. I have a leftover decal from the restoration several years ago. Believe I got it in a kit of several decals from AH Spares. It is a 11/16th x 1.5" white vinyl decal with red lettering reading:

IMPORTANT
When resetting trip counters
push knob and rotate clockwise
until all counters are at zero

The instructions with the kit stated that the decal is placed directly onto the speedometer's glass. It just didn't seem right, plus I've never seen a car with this decal. Does anyone know if this decal is correct for a BJ8, and, if so, where does it go?

Yes, it goes right on the speedometer glass, on the lower portion of the gauge face. I think that when you peel it off its backing, you'll see that it is actually clear with red lettering (not white with red lettering).

Reid,

This sticker WAS white vinyl with red lettering. I've had it for almost 23 years, and my uncertainty then is now confirmed. This particular decal can't be placed directly on the speedometer glass. Among other things, it would obstruct the high beam. Maybe this one is supposed to go on the speedometer casing? Do you know if anyone has the clear decals or was it supposed to be a water-transfer? I have never seen this decal listed anywhere.

Thanks,

Rob

If you have had it for 23 years you probably shouldn't try installing it. I had a set of decals for a Model Racecar for about 6 years and when I dipped them in water then went to transfer them to the car they fell all to piececs.
Since it it is rare item maybe you could take the original and have it reproduced. Bob

I found this decal on ebay.co.uk. When I received it, it wasn't correct. It was on white vinyl (same problem as the one I had for 23 years--can't see the speedo through white vinyl!). I contacted the seller, explained the problem, and she got back to me in a couple of days stating that she contacted her supplier and now has the transparent decals. I bought a few extras for spares. The seller's tag on ebay.co.uk is Thistle Soup (1518). The item number is 4651634309. The seller's name is Suzie Singleton--her email is suzie.singleton@virgin.net. She has 12 pages of decals for many, many British cars. Can't vouch for any other decals, but the speedo one is correct. Two pounds plus 1 pound shipping. Got a discount--I bought several. She has about a dozen LBCs, mostly Trimuphs & MGs. A neat person and a good seller.

I suspect that many folks never saw these decals because the dealers probably would remove them during prep for first sale...along with the plastic on the seats, the little "export" or "US" stickers on lamp lenses, the Cosmoline....

I've seen a few of these stickers very "badly" placed on the speedo glass, which I think further supports my theory. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
