When did we declare independence from Britain?

During the Second Continental Congress, held in Philadelphia, delegates from British colonies in America voted to approve a resolution of "independancy" from Great Britain, on July 2, 1776.

Take a look at the original resolution and report of the vote - and notice which colonies are recorded as voting Aye:

The "Declaration of Independence" was the July 4, 1776 public statement of why the resolution was approved.

It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more." - John Adams

I've no particular dislike of fireworks <span style="font-style: italic">per se</span>, rather the irresponsible <span style="font-style: italic">USE</span> of the stuff.

...and some people's complete lack of understanding of physics or the word "responsibility".

The vote on the subject of independence was held on July 2nd. Immediately after the vote the Congress started to deliberate on the <span style="font-style: italic">language</span> of the Declaration. By late morning on July 4th they had concluded deliberation and the <span style="font-style: italic">document</span> was officially adopted by the Congress when the President of the Congress (John Hancock), and the Secretary (Charles Thomson) signed the Declaration. Thats where the date on the Declaration, and our day of celebration come from.
 
The Declaration of Independence, dated 4 July, was actually signed on August 2nd (which happens to be my birthday).
 
And I thought Jesus' birthday was a controversy! :crazyeyes:
