In-tank Fuel Replacement Question

I've been getting an intermittent starting problem and occasional code 44 (fuel failure) so I had a Jag shop run a diagnostic. The mechanic sait it's the fuel the in-tank fuel pump or pressure unit in the pump.

I expect to pay a higher dollar amount for just about any type of repairs but I was surprised at the $1,200 plus estimate.

Is this what a fuel pump replacement costs? I don't think the part is all that expensive. I've seen online prices around $300. Is the labor that intensive?

Any comments greatly appreciated.

John, Your 94 fuel injection system uses an in tank fuel pump and filter module. The module is only supplied by the Jag dealer as complete and costs significantly over $600 from the dealer. It is also no small job to remove the fuel tank to make the replacement. Jag has had problems with over heated wiring going to the fuel pump in the tank and that is why they will only replace the complete module. You are taking a chance if you only replace the pump and keep the old wiring. Its your decision but I personnally think that retrofitting an external (from the tank) fuel pump from an 88 or 89 XJ6 offers a cheaper and better alternative. Jack Farrington

I don't disagree with Jack witht he exception that aftermarket pumps and assemblies are available. I looked one up and the entire assembly will run you about $725 plus shipping.
