EU deciding diesel is not so good...

In Europe, "diesel" now a bad word...

It's a result of evolving technical knowledge mixed with the geo-politics of the well head location.
The particulate traps were a decent solution but they are easy to disable. This sort of reminds me of when people would remove PVC emissions control valves on gasoline cars under the false notion that it would add more power.
I think there was also a thought that the bio-diesel production would bring a clearer fuel (and thus, cleaner diesels).
But the manufacturing process of choice for bio-diesel fuel is energy intensive and has resulted in more emissions at the source.
Normal diesel fuel can also be reduced in sulfur (which produces much of the toxic emissions) but this process is expensive and also energy intensive.
Otherwise the best solution for clean diesels is to start with light, sweet crude. Which is mostly available in Algeria and Libya.....not exactly simple places to do business.

Because the diesel around here is very low in lubricant and power per gallon, I use Power Service fuel additive in the fuel for my tractors. 80 oz does 250 gallons. Running all day, I can get almost 2 more hours of running by using it and the engines have a softer sound along with more power. Negligible fuel pump wear also. Plus my tractors emit no smoke!

Very true, Mark.
I guess I was thinking primarily of where Europeans would shop for oil (but yes......oil drilled anywhere affects world supply and cost).

The diesels I absolutely hate are the miserable worn out diesel pickups smoking, stinking, and clattering their way through traffic. I have heard there is a kit that idiots install on their pickups, I guess it dumps raw diesel in the exhaust to put out clouds of black smoke. Think I saw one of those in action the other day: absolutely clouded the intersection when he accelerated from the stop light.

I guess you'd have to be pretty darned asinine to want a kit like that. I'll never understand some people.
