14 Million cars being recalled that include Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, BMW, GM. The inflator may be defective and could cause explosive shrapnel to hit people in face and chest.

Thanks for the heads up Bas. Luckily my wife's Toyota is not one of the ones listed.
 
I guess one can go to the Transportation/Highway administration website and type in a VIN.
I wonder if Lexus is included with Toyota products. Suppose I ought to look.

This is a good example of the downside of consolidation -- there are definitely benefits to these larger suppliers (lower cost it the main one), but there are also fewer points for bigger failure. Not that many airbag manufacturers, so if one (Takata in this case) has an issue, it effects almost everyone.
