No toll roads around here, so no need to worry. I rarely drive with them on, just in the cold mornings sometimes. Mine are pretty clouded up and hard to see out of right now.

There is a snap on the bottom rear of the side curtain that allows for entry into the car. Snap the fabric off, and you can fold it up just enough to get a hand in and open the door.

The sliding ones are probably more practical, but these are the original ones to the car, and they work well enough that I'll keep them. Besides, I sort of like the look with them on.

I have a set of the original "flexible" sidescreens for ncbugeye, still in reasonably good physical shape, but the plastic has become very heavily discoloured (brown spots) and more or less opaque, and I was wondering if they can be refurbished for less than the cost of a new Ferrari.... ?

I work on yachts here in S. Fl. and there are a few people around who redo the Isinglass windows which are sewn into canvass or fabric for marine applications, perhaps contacting someone like that who can replace the clear and/or canvass portion might work! Cost is probably not too bad as they routinely are replacing pieces that are many times the size of a Sprite window!

I'm counting on them not being too expensive to replace. It's not a complicated piece, and certainly not very big. Since we have the originals as a pattern, they shouldn't have too much to do. I'm planning on finding a local shop that specializes in convertible tops and the like, and hope they are interested in a project like this.

Perhaps we can ask for a bulk price... I'm in.

I wonder how many of us are using the old style side screens. Most cars I've seen have the sliders. A group buy is a good idea, if we can gather a few folks and find a good place to have the work done. My frames could use a sanding and some fresh paint, but they're otherwise in good shape.

I think the switch to sliding panels happened during the Bugeye production. My guess is that the switch took place after December 1958 since ncbugeye has the old style. Perhaps we should do a poll to get a few more "points on the graph" to get a more accurate estimate.

I have read that all bugeyes had the solid side curtians and always wondered if it was tue. There are just too many sliding curtains. My car's no, is around 6500 and it has the sliding curtains.

According to Horler, the sliding screens became optional with car AN5-8283, December 1958 (same time the factory hardtop came out). The sliders became officially standard with car AN5-34558 (March 1960). A few more cars supposedly came out with the original type screens until car AN5-39945 (May, 1960).

Some trivia to start your day...
