I'm thinking of getting a Jag... ADVICE NEEDED!

Welcome to the forum. There ae probably lots of opinions on this, but for my money, the XJ6 sedands with the 4.2L Six are great cars! If you find a Jag (any Jag) that you are seriously interested in, it would be worth a few bucks to have it checked out by a competent mechanic. Jags, especially the newer ones (after the 80's) are not any less reliable than any other car, but in some cases maintenance can be a bit more. That's why its a good idea to get it check out first. Just a little insurance.

Yello all,
Could someone give me some advice and things i should consider before getting a Jaguar. I'm looking at jag's from around '92(suits my economy) and preferebly with "smaller" engines... 3.2l ...

So, which Jaguar-models have the "smaller"

engines? Is the 3.2liter the most economical jag-engine(in terms of petrol-consumtion)?

I've seen a few jag's who are called "bentley" but they don't have the jag-emblem on the front.. what's up with that?

I've heard horror-stories about things breaking on jags and the cost for repair or replacement is out of this world? is this true? Should one be worried that "someday" the auto-trasmission could break?

What should i think about and consider when i'm looking at a Secondhand Jag? ..just so that if i find one i don't get screwed over and have to pay huge amounts in repair?

As you all can read i'm abit worried and need information before i have the confidence to get a jag.... help me out if you can or have experience. many thanks. - TJ

I'm thinkin economy here since petrol is quite expensive in sweden. You might be thinkin "well, if you want to be economical you shouldn't get a jag in the first place." but, they're so **** beautiful that i want to have one anyway.

I agree with Basils advice. The 4 Liter engine is a very reliable and excellent piece of work. It has very long longevity before overhaul operations are required. Transmission problems with the 88 through 94 (XJ40) models are only electrical. Expensive mechanical repairs are very unusual. I personally recommend getting the best condition Jaguar and pay the price rather than get a bargain "fix up" project. Repairs can be shocking. Cosmetic fix ups such as leather and wood work can be very expensive. Good luck with your shopping and best regards. You are a man of fine tastes. Jack Farrington

thanks you for your replies and sharing of experience.

Btw... Does any of you know why some jaguars have the jaguar "metal-piece" on the front while others don't? The Daimler XJ40 apparently doesn't have it while the Daimler Double six does... hmm confusing.. What's IS the deal really with Daimler...

A Daimler with a Jaguar in the front? That's a first for me! I thought Daimlers only had a "D"!

Still wondering about the jaguar-emblem on the front? .. anybody?

Also, is there a difference in "quality" on the jags before or after ford bought the company in the early 90s? was thinkin if i should get a pre- or pro-90s car.. Newer isn't always better so.. who knows. Maby you could fill me in on this. thanks.

I'm wondering the same as the original post. Thought I'd pop on and see if anyone has any more input since it's been a little while since the original post.

Thanks in advance.
