I'm Now In The Triumph Parts Manufacturing Biz...

They say that necessity is the mother of invention. I couldn't find a source for door wood for my TR2...so I made my own! I actually "outsourced" the manufacturing of the piece but it's my design and tooling jigs.

Here's part #101....

These are going to retail for $40.00 per side. Made of select kiln-dried American white ash. Perfect reproductions that exactly mimic the contours of the TR door.

I heard from one TR supplier that some of the previously available pieces did not have the correct contour and would cause the door tops to bend. Not on these!

Give me your feedback...lemme know what you think!

Good job! How about waterproofing? Any thoughts there?

Glad to see folks taking the initiative; may well be the future of parts sourcing for us.

I'm getting a door wood just looking at them. For $40 a side, I'll take a pair.

Thanks for the positive input. This isn't a big profit center but at least I can help a few guys repair their cars with a good product.

PeterK...I'll be geared up to ship at the end of next week. I'll get some details from you then.

Thanks.

Good work! I had to do some filling/ redrilling for my wood pieces a couple years ago-- These would have been nice. The wood I have is probably considerably softer than yours.

Now how about fashioning a hub to mount a TR6 fan for our TR3's ?

My 3A has recesses vut and a center hole for the side curtain and dzus center in it. Did you TR2 have these originally?

I think a good idea would be to make about 50 sets of them and ship them out to all the 2and 3 guys to try on their cars!

I'm not expert on these things but I would guess these are a good fit on the cars with the wedge-type sidescreens but could be modified to fit the pre-60000 TR3A's.

I'd like to get my hands on a later TR3A piece with the extra holes...I certainly could rework one of these to make 'em work.

All of my cars are either too early or too late...

So what's the difference in the fan mounts?

Needs to be shorter. Some folks turn the fan around and run it backward but I'd rather not do that.

Actually, mine is one of the last 3As with Dzus sidescreens, just before the wedge screen started.

My door wood pieces are perfect except for the dozens of screw hole from side screen fitting over the years.

I suppose I could just fill the holes. Not planning on doing the body again for a few years.

Peter,

The wedge mounts were on the earlier cars...maybe yours was retro-fitted with wedge mounts. I tried out a '61 earlier this winter that was equipped with wedgemounts and AMCO sidescreens.

My last driver, TS74011L had Dzus mounts....but no screens...we roughed it!

You're right. Changeover to Dzus was after TS28825, mine is TS29694. When I got the car, it had wedgemount Amco sidescreens which I changed out to the proper ones for my chassis. Somehow I got it backwards in my head but you & Mr. Piggott straightened me out.

Still got the screw holes though. It's tough to get the sidescreens mounted correctly so they don't stick out in the front and the doors still close.

There are some pretty good polyesther wood fillers out there that may help you fill those holes...I've used "Rock-Hard" brand filler on several home projects and it works pretty good.

Somewhere in there the TR3 doors went full metal. I know there was an overlap of still using wood and having the new dzus fasteners though. The full metal doors still had wood blocks where the dzus fasteners screwed on, but the blocks are much easier to fabricate on those ones.
Nice job on those crafted pieces YankeeTR. I'm impressed.
Mine are still in excellent shape, so I don't need them, but If I did I'd definatly buy a set from you, and I'll keep you in mind for any future possibilities.

Thanks Banjo...the fella that does 'em for me builds oak and ash-bodied woodies...BIG $$$ (he will re-body yours for about 100K!) and world class quality. I'm lucky to have found him.

Mickey,

I would think that several doses of Thompson's Waterproofing would help...may good old Spar varnish?

I thought of making them from treated southern yellow pine but my supplier said you can't beat ash for holding the screws tight and keeping it's shape over time.
