By a new Nissan Altima commercial I keep hearing on the radio. One of it's selling points the enthusiastic shopper points out is that it has " active understeer control." I know all front wheel drive cars inherently bias towards a little understeer, but if it is so bad in your car that you have to have electronic countermeasures, why would you brag about it? To me it makes it sound like the Nissan engineers need to go back to the drawing board and make a car that handles a little better. If for no other reason, the "active understeer control" would be enough to keep me from shopping for a Nissan. I feel better now that I've ranted a bit, thanks for listening.

I see it everywhere.
Folks who are not aware of any understeer issue...or even what understeer is....will automatically think this is wonderful.
Automatic seatbelts, proximity sensors, radar ranging, automatic braking.

You should see the garbage the digital sound reinforcement folks put out trying to get you to move from a fully functional analog system.

For all the submarine types......"The new SubRoc has an upgraded lock to prevent accidental light offs".

That means there must have been a problem with solid fuel propellant lighting off in the people part before being tube loaded....


The really scary part is the TV ads for the new drugs.
Reports of cancer, stroke, heart attack, loss of virility, loss of bowel control have been reported.
If you experience any of these symptoms, see your doctor.......

The ones that get me are the antidepressant ads that list "thoughts of suicide" as a side effect.
 
I am more annoyed by the advertisements hyping touch screens on new cars, a tactile switch makes much more sense on a car for reasons that should be obvious. As far as the understeer control, don't know specifically about the Altima, but, as stated, most all front wheel drive cars are inherent understeerers, although I have not experienced it, many new cars have electronic controls that control the differential and brakes to alter handling characteristics, such a system has been praised on the performance version of one of the new, relatively small Fords, either the Focus or the Fiesta, don't know how well it works in execution on the new Altima.

That being said, I would prefer to limit my understeer the old fashioned way, with a deft foot on the throttle, and ample power under the hood of my RWD car.

Imagine this in the near future: new passwords must be between 11 and 26 characters, no dictionary words, at least two numbers and two capital letters, plus at least one diacritical mark like ~ ( + # or @.

JP - I saw the original (in Norwegian?) several years ago. One of the funniest (and most appropriate) "tech help" comments I've ever seen.
