My Mrs. found out the hard way. Here in NJ, the cops use license plate scanners and can find out any info about you that's in the DMV database in seconds. Her license was unwittingly 3 months expired when she was pulled over. The cop was nice though and only ticketed her for windscreen obstruction by her sat-nav. $50 vs $200.

Don't they send you a bill? Around here about 3 months before the license expires you get a bill and renewal form in the mail. Same thing with the car registration, complete with a list of exactly what tests or documentation you may need (Eye exam, safety inspection for the car...)

Besides your DOB, your social, credit card #'s, mother's maiden, etc. It is scarey what is out there. Truly tough to be anonymous anymore.
