Ignition wires

Wondering if the ignition wire numbers represent the firing order or are they just numbered 1-6 front to rear.

Thanks

I didn't do a very good job of asking the question. I'm putting new wires on with numbers and the old ones wern't numbered. So I wasn't sure if the numbers should represent the firing order or should just be 1-6 front to rear.

Thanks

Each wire's number should correspond with the number of the cylinder it services.

Or in other words, the most forward cylinder will have the #1 spark plug wire which would go on the distributor cap where the rotor points to that position when the #1 cylinder is top dead center. The # 2 or second inline cylinder wire goes on the dist cap in a position four away from the #1 wire (counter clockwise direction) etc. etc. according to the firing order. The position right next to #1 on the dist cap is where spark plug wire 5 would go.
