Ignition switch wiring order help

I have a 72 TR6 and need some help with the wiring order on the 'ignition switch'
I do see that the switch has the numbers 1/2/3/5.

Red white is on the 3

Do the two brown white wires go on 5?

What number do the white wires go on?

I thought 72 and earlier ignition switches only had 4 wires. Goes to show how memory plays tricks on you.

I had to go look, and sure enough, I was partially correct. 4-pins used, but numbered 1,2,3,5.

On the 4-pin switch, Pin 1 is starter solenoid, Pin 2 is Battery feed, Pin 3 is Ignition, pin 5 is accesories.

I read this on another forum: Is this correct?

It was designed to have #1 connected to a white wire (Ignition) #2 is Aux (radio etc) #3 is white w/red tracer (starter sol) #5 is Brown W/ white tracer. (Power)
You can confirm this by checking the pin connections at the different switch positions.
Off = 0
Aux = 2 to 5
Ign = 2 to 3 to 5
start = 1 to 2 to 3
I think the old 1971 switch had 3 white wires so if that is correct on your car you will need to either splice the three together or get a tripple connector to use on #1 pin.
I hope this helps, let me know.

I had all the numbers set out in a post for six-pin, then found "early" TR-6 4-pin numbered as above.
W/R is to starter solenoid, so your having W/R on Pin 3 is not right. On a 4-pin switch, marked 1,2,3,5, 3 is Ignition Feed, not starter.
Pictures, please.

On the later switch (73), white wire(s) go to pin 3.
Brown wires go to pins 2 and 4.
Brown/red wire goes to pin 6.
White/Pink radio feed is pin 5.
White/Red starter solenoid is pin 1.

On earlier switches, as listed above, "On the 4-pin switch, Pin 1 is starter solenoid, Pin 2 is Battery feed, Pin 3 is Ignition, pin 5 is accesories."
That would be up to 3 white wires on pin 3, maybe 2 brown and white wires (battery feed from ammeter and send to headlights) on pin 2, white/red start lead on pin 1, my diagram shows pin 5 empty, with all ignition and accessory fed via pin 3, but I think I'd swap out some accessory loads to pin 5.

Trouble is, no matter how you cut it, White/Red solenoid is NEVER on pin 3.

Whites to which number 3 wires on two connectors
whites to pin 3 (either double pins or you need a splitter)

Red white 1 wire to which number
red/white to pin 1

Brown / white (2 wires) to which number
brown/white to pin 2.

IF it's the right switch.

Ok I did that order and the car starts but will not stay running. If I hold the key it does? I am wondering if my switch is bad now..
Or we are getting close...

I was afraid of that. You have to jump between two diagrams to figure this out, and then the question is what year ignition switch do you actually have?

Since it starts, my guess is the brown/whites are on the wrong pin. Could be they are on the "start" lead, which would allow run while holding in "start".
Look at the diagram on this one:
https://www.advanceautowire.com/earlytr6st.pdf
That shows where the wires are supposed to go.
Then look at this one:
https://www.advanceautowire.com/tr2506.pdf
and scroll down to 72 TR6.
That shows a different order, but no switch pin numbers.

Second schematic shows brown/white battery feed at 12:00, white ignition and accessory at 3:00, red/white start at 6:00.

Got an ohmmeter?

The only way this can do what it's doing is the battery has to be now conected to the "start" pin, for all power to go away unless you hold the key to start.

My thoughts are to connect battery (brown/white) to then pins the red/white start lead is now in.
Disconnect all others, check voltage on other pins. You will find "start" only with key full over, connect red/white to that.
Does your ignition have an accessory position, CCW from off?

No accessory position.

I did just try this and it seems to work for the most part.
whites on pin 2
Red / white on pin 3
Brown / white on pin 5

Even the ign light comes on as it should. But then sometimes it stays very dim with the key off. I am beginning to think that my switch is going bad.

Pin 3 is the start lead.. red white
I am going to order a new switch on monday and see what that does...

Sprayed some contact cleaner in the switch and it seems to be doing better..

I think we have it..

Thank you for the input TOC..

whites on pin 2
Red / white on pin 3
Brown / white on pin 5

To sum it up...
