Ignition switch wire

Hello,
Can anyone tell me the purpose of the black wire with a green tracer that is connected on the outside of a Triumph ignition switch. It is the type that mounts on the steering column.
Thanks.

Likely it depends on which Triumph ... on my Triumph Stag, it's the wire to the "key-in-switch warning buzzer". It gets grounded when the key is inserted in the lock (not necessarily turned, just inserted). Then the other side of the buzzer gets power whenever the driver's door is open, so the buzzer sounds if you open the door without taking out the key.

Or at least that's the way it did work, before I got annoyed at it /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

As Randall notes, it is part of the grounding circuit that sounds the buzzer when you open the door.

The Black/Green usually does not go directly to ground, but goes from the ignition switch (which is grounded when you insert the key) to your LH door switch. The LH door switch is normally-open when the door is closed. The other side of the door switch may have a Black/Orange wire from it to the seatbelt/door buzzer to complete the circuit. (No sense using one color when you can use two....).
