Ignition Points ["points closed"]

We did a long drive Sunday, from Tahoe to the coast, up the coast and back to Tahoe. About 450 miles. Temps in Sacramento about 100. The Healey ran real well until we stopped 20 miles west of Sacramento. It was very hot! When we started again it han "hard" the next 120 miles but OK at speed. It turned out that the points closed shut causing the timing to retard, I guess. This happened once before and I'm sure how or why. More important, how do I provent it from happening again. The little screw was tight in the closed position. Re-gapped,re-timed and it runs great. My guess is that lock-tight won't help since the screw was tight. Has anyone else ever had this problem?
Thanks,TH

Re: points closed

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Oh My Gosh No! TH,"to prevent it from happening again" install a Pertronix electronic kit.FWIW---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: points closed

Perhaps a crinkle or star washer of the type that have little twisted blades under the screw ?

Re: points closed

When you install new points, you should always apply point cam lube preventing wear. The mounting screw is not the porblem. The rubbing block for the contact points is probably worn.

Re: points closed

Actually the block is 6 weeks old and I do use the lub. It happened to the previous set up a year ago. I'll try the lock washer. Thanks.

Re: points closed

TH, if you just like playing with those points you might get a set of Standard Motor Products- Points, Part#LU1617P or with the cam luber Part # LU1617XP they are virtually idendical to original Lucas parts and much more reliable than the parts from our usual suspects.-FWIW---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: points closed

TH. I use to get them direct from the distributor .Their products are generally carried by non discount {better} automotive parts houses. They may have to order them for you if they are not fast moving parts. I have not searched the web for a site you might give that a try and it may turn up a source close to you.-FWIW---Keoke----Yes they have a web site; Standard Motor Parts INC-then click on "Car Owners"-Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif

Re: points closed

Could this be the same problem I am having with my '78 TR7. It has Pertronix and just died on me on the hi-way the other day. I can't figure it out. If I play with the setup of the points, I get spark from all plugs, then the next time I check, no spark. Maybe my points are shot? It is a Lucas Dizzy.

Thanks
Paul

Re: points closed

HiKlutz. Pertronix and points don't mix. The pertronix unit is a pointless electronic ignition that can be fitted to the Lucas Dizzy. If you have points in the car and suffer a loss of ignition, assuming all connection are good and tight, then perhaps the points and condenser should be replaced. You might try replacing them and then let us know how you get on. If you need a parts source there in CA let me know.Regards---Keoke

Re: points closed

Thanks, Keoke.. Don't know why I said points, I meant the pickup. I am pretty sure the small box on the fender with the wires that run to the retard on the Dizzy says Pertronix, I am not at the car now. Will check tomorow, and dedicate more hours on the Dizzy this time.

Thanks again
Paul
