this has happened to me on 4 previous occasions. The regulator on the back of the alternator has failed. The ignition light stays on as long as the battery is connected regardless of whether the motor is running or not. The only fix for mine was a new regulator each time.
I won't be having this prob with the Bosch one...hopefully.

I think the 17ACRs had a slightly bigger (wider) stator but used the same hook-up at the back. The 18ACR did away with the L-shaped plug and used a single brown wire, at least on the one I have. Sounds like your hook-up wiring is good.

FINELY GOT THIS FIXED. Because I was out of town I finely got to drive the car over to the auto electric place I had my alternator rebuilt at and got it straightened out. I wish I could tell you exactly what was wrong but, he took one look at it, went inside and came out in 5 minutes with a new custom made set of connectors for the alternator and bingo. Charges to 13.5, all the lights work and ignition light goes off as it should. Said he thought this was a replacement alternator and not original to the car, and he "wired it like an MG ". Being an amatuer Tinster I go with the flow and everything is hunky dory.
