My ignition key switch continues to turn when you go to start the car. Is there a star washer or something that locks it down.

Are you saying the whole switch rotates? The threaded shaft of the switch has a notch in it and the chrome bezel it fits into is shaped like a "D".

You only did half a job, what about drawing the chrome escutcheon / switch plate that the switch fits in  fitted on the bj8, this has the same cutout shape as Greg's drawing shows. So in theory the switch should only be able to rotate a little.

If its the right switch, being a model 47sa part number 31973k.

yes a star washer might help, I think it should have a thin metal spring plate washer as standard, between the switch and plate, with the bezel fitted on the front of the plate.

Well, that might explain it. It is not the original switch and the center console had some adjustments to it. I will have to check, but I think someone changed the D to and O.

The good news: I have the D in the panel. I found the original ignition and swapped the key slot. Problem solved.

Thanks
