Idle speed for dynamic timing

The specs for my 1960 bugeye with a 1098 engines say that dynamic timing is 6 btc at 600 rpm. My car won't idle smoothly that low, so it's hard to use that for a timing benchmark. Does anyone else use something with a haigher idle speed. Thanks

Bob, try 10*BTDC at 1000. I've found that the published timing figures are pretty much guidelines, rather than hard numbers. Try playing with the adjustment to find the "Sweet Spot". Some of mine run as much as 14*BTDC at 1000 RPM.
28~32 total advance at 2500 RPM.

I set my stock 948 at 10-12 degrees at about 900 RPM. Runs really nicely and not a hint of preignition.

Intresting, I have mine at 5 degrees at 850.
