idle slowing down

On my BE (stock carbs), I can set the idle speed to run just above 1000 rpm.

But the idle speed creeps lower over the course of a few hours of running until it gets so slow it stalls.

Then I have to re-adjust the carb idle screws.

Is this a normal problem?

Do I need to replace the screws, the springs under the screws?

Should I glue them in place? (but then lose any future adjustment ability)

Should be a spring between the top of the idle screw and the car plate. Part of the spring in a ball point pen will work fine. Nice and tight and they will not move.
 
I do have a spring on the shaft of each idle screw.

It applies pressure to the head of the screw I assume to keep the screw from moving.

So I guess I need new springs (the ones I have are at least 20 years old.
 
Make some from ball point ink pen springs, should work, or get some at ACE.
