Yes, that USAIR captain did a excellent job putting that MD-80 down in the river and not have any fatalities. He had no choice as to where to put it.
There has always been a problem with flocks of geese in that area The FAA had canons to keep them scared off, but evidently they are not doing that any more.
They got into both engines at the same time and flamed out both engines at the same time. A passenger reported that both engines were on fire. That is because
the first stage compressors were taken out by the by the geese, so there was only flame coming out of the tail pipes. Just fire. No thrust.
That was not just luck. That was pure flying skill.
My uncle stopped logging after 20,000 hours.
(that's 2 years 3 months in the air)
