I'd fly with Sully any day!

That's the first footage I've seen. Can't believe the river wasn't iced over. Made me think of the Air Florida flight that went into the Potomac.
 
Just caught that on the news this morning! Sheesh, some floats on that and it would have been a perfect sea-plane landing!!
 
That's why they call them "professional pilots" ! They know what to do and execute to perfection when called upon to do it! :thumbsup:
 
I asked my uncle what he thought about it & he sent me the following e-mail...

Yes, that USAIR captain did a excellent job putting that MD-80 down in the river and not have any fatalities. He had no choice as to where to put it.
There has always been a problem with flocks of geese in that area The FAA had canons to keep them scared off, but evidently they are not doing that any more.
They got into both engines at the same time and flamed out both engines at the same time. A passenger reported that both engines were on fire. That is because
the first stage compressors were taken out by the by the geese, so there was only flame coming out of the tail pipes. Just fire. No thrust.
That was not just luck. That was pure flying skill.

My uncle stopped logging after 20,000 hours.
(that's 2 years 3 months in the air)
So I figured I'd get an informed opinion.
 
It was said on the news that the initial listen to the "black box" tapes had several thumps recorded on both sides of the plane and loss of power in both engines during the noise.

It was mentioned that an earlier 767 water landing didn't work out as well. Seems from what I saw that the big thing was this guy kept the wings level all the way in and set the plane down tail first.
 
Poor Sully, read the article in Newsweek today. He really doesn't like all this attention and doesn't consider himself a hero, just doing his job. I think all the publicity has been hard on him. I feel for the guy, besides greatly admire him. That is the stuff America was made of, and hope still is.
 
We can keep our fingers crossed. He really is one of those with th' right stuff for sure.
 
Enough of this plane crash stuff.

Absolutely. They're crossin' T's and dottin' I's as if th' checklist were a final exam now.

Flip a coin :eeek: and that would be about right.
 
That "box" is kinda general. I'd like to see it broken down into aircraft categories the same as the overall ones presented above it... and add how many of the 53% were in retractable gear vs. fixed.

Tho I s'pose ya could "fluff" a Cessna SkyCatcher into calm water and swim away easier than ditchin' a Citation and surviving.

Interesting issue, that.
 
It is said statistically your odds of being on a plane with a bomb is one million to one and your odds of being on a plane with 2 bombs is one BILLION to one....so increase your odds and always carry a bomb! LoL
 
You may not want to make that joke while in an airport line up. Sound of latex gloves being snapped on...
