Frank:
I too was surprised at a sudden change of status at my now former employer and found myself unemployed at age 60 effective 12/31/07. I was fortunate in that I received a decent severence package and started drawing my retirement from from the former employer as it would have been foolish to wait at all for that.
I was in no way prepared for retirement (although I would have lover to!) so after relaxing for a month I started looking for a job in my field (Insurance Compliance Officer). I found a few possibilities on the east coast (which meant an across country move at my expense) and lo and behold I ended up with two job offers in one day here in Cali! One was from a former colleague and the other was a position I found on my own. I ended up working for my former colleague in an office directly across an outdoor plaza from my former employer. The other position paid less and was about 35 heart wrenching commute miles away but I would have been thrilled to work there too. I'm just trying to say, no matter age etc. always know you will work again - if you choose too!
I've been here for a year and a half now and 62 arrives on May 25th. Hopefully I will be able to spend the rest of my working career here (at least 4 more years plus one more after that to buy toys!)
Take your time and you will see, all good things will come to you.
