Figuratively speaking... Local camera club results for the latest competition (portraiture, one animal, one human)

First photo to come up on the screen in my division was my animal submission...

Only got 202/300, a little disappointed, not a very good score at all, a good score in our club is anywhere in the 230 - 240 range or higher... Still have one more to go though to make it up...

Human portraiture...

A friend of mine local artist, did an impromptu photoshoot that night (she has been commissioned to paint the man hole covers along a stretch of downtown Calgary), I did put much thought into this photo, got a rather crappy score of 197/300! :mad-new: Really couldn't concentrate anymore as the rest of the photos rolled by, including the many that scored far higher and were much poorer photos with no creativity level at all... I will admit that the three photos that won did deserve to win, it's just that both my photos got some of the lowest scores of the whole competition, I know they are better than that, and yes I am not happy right now! :hammer:

Now I know the club judges for these things are not professionals, just other club members who signed up for the night, heck I judge sometimes, but sheesh

Question, James: When you get your scores at these competitions, do you also get critiques/explanations? If not, I'd sure suggest to the powers-that-be that they're doing everyone who enters a disservice.

Just a score, they will critique some of the images but most just simply get a score...

Around here they'd arrest you for painting public property not pay you. And I am sorry to hear you photos did not go over well with the judges.

Hate to say it so bluntly but, if you don't want to hear the answer, don't ask the question. Might be easier to post them here or wherever and worry less about what others think. At the very least it might be worth "timing yourself out" for a few months.

What JP says! James, we have long been fans of your photography, and we are probably better-qualified than those so-called judges.

So I do know I have a few fans out there, just have yet to chalk up a win in anything important, hasn't quite happened yet... :rolleye:

And Walter, Mandy was commissioned by our downtown business group to paint these and she is a very good artist! Far more successful than I am that's for sure... :highly_amused:

Tell us where those judges live - we'll visit them in the small hours and put a bat up their night dress! :cowboy:

Bas are you going to start giving people offers they can't refuse? James I hope none of the judges own expensive race horses.
