Anyone who has followed the progress of my TR3A restoration is aware that I have had all kinds of weird problems and near insurmountable challenges.

BUT, I think anyone who buys one of these kits may have have a much greater challenge!!!

Tom: Kinda like one size fits all!

More like "one size defrauds all".

Also interesting - read the reviews for the guy's sales of those things. They're mostly "wow - great product! can't wait to put it on the car!"

Russ: I agree with you. BTW, did you get any of that nasty weather recently, you know high wind, trees down, etc?

"This package has all new quality parts that are capable of producing well beyond 485 horsepower at 25+ PSI with supporting modifications and a built motor."

I bet that will be fun for the three minutes before it blows up.

and I bet that it won't blow up at all. Matter of fact, it won't do ANYTHING more than the "modified and built" motor already does!

(there's one born every minute ...)

I think you guys are being overly negative.

As noted, this is just a "one size fits none" collection of parts (not even a kit). The seller just lists them with every known car model to get people looking at his auctions.

But it does seem to be a pretty comprehensive collection of parts at a very good price. And while I have not had time (yet) to try it, I do believe that a TR motor could be made to live with oh, say 1 atmosphere of boost producing around 200 bhp at the flywheel. For sure you'd be running forged pistons, and a compression ratio down below 8:1, probably even a Moldex crank. But it sure looks like fun to try.

I wonder what ever happened with this one

Randall, Jim's TR2 turbo "Mongoose" was finished some time ago. Haven't seen it as it's 500+ miles north, but reports are that it pulls like a Boeing on steroids.

Thanks, Viv. As I recall, the comments at the time were very similar to those above. I'm glad to hear that the doom, gloom and rumors of boom were not correct!

Fair point Randall. It is a function of boost / mixture and timing. I've had friends get 2 of the 3 right and it ended badly. The size and shape of the turbos matter, ditto where the wastegate comes in etc... Just a lot to get right on your own, especially if you are looking for a big number.

"T3/T4" refers to the turbocharger unit itself which is a hybrid design for quick spool and high flow. I think you'll find that the kit it is just over-marketed as they seem to market it to every car they can think of that isn't already turbocharged, but is just a generic kit that would still require some fabrication skills for a nice performing and fitting package. Several Audi/VW/Porsche engines, as well as several of the more modern Japanese engines, can take 25psi on stock bottom ends for quite some time and thousands of miles. TR3/4 engine... not so much, lower boost pressures sure maybe even up to 1 atmosphere as Randall was saying with the right pistons and prep. But 25psi is getting closer to two.

Which is why the "kit" includes an adjustable boost controller. You don't have to run 25 psi; he's just saying that is what the blower is capable of.

Of course, it is tough to pass up the temptation to put another turn on the "horsepower screw"
