I think I'm out of my photographic slump...

James,
You know I am already a fan of your work. Although I made a living at photography, it was M*A*S*H unit photography taking photos of up to 600 subjects a day. It was a business, and resulted in many excellent portraits, but then a pro photographer has already been described as one who takes a lot more photos than an amateur. I have finally gotten back into hobby photography after over 30 years taking the school portraits, and having much more fun with it too.

Keep posting here, and I will also keep monitoring your Flick'r page as well.

I suppose "Pro" can be defined different ways...

I have debated in my heads the pro's and con's of being a Pro fulltime photographer (if one can even pull it off in the first place), I am aware that many talented people in the creative fields work full-time at their day job their whole life while doing their creative thing during their off hours.

It does seem to me that the Pro full-time photographer has access to situations that a hobbyist just doesn't get, in particular event photography and/or world travel (ie. photojournalism), etc...

As someone who works a day job, I only have so many hours a week to devote to my craft, and I feel like it gets in my way of certain opportunities I'd love to take advantage of.

But I hear what you're saying Dave...

Dave! I defrayed expenses in college by "kidnapping": Beatty Portronic 70mm, background, Photogenic (3 heads) strobe set-up, stool, etc... ALL crammed into an MGB. Traveled all over western PA, West Virginia and Maryland. Part-timed as a news photog for local rags (including covering three of whichever HS ball game was in season every Friday night) and worked in a camera store evenings & weekends doing sales and repair work.

James: JUMP IN! You gotta make the commitment or be a hobbyist. Knock on doors, book in-hand and go for it.

LOTS of doors.
