I've been a Midget owner for two years now. I obviously love the little car given how much time and money I've spent on it. I set out for an MGB, but settled for a midget for a bunch of reasons.

Now my rich uncle is offering to sell me his resorted '78 MGB. Mechanicals are all about four years old. It looks fantastic outside (a little worn on the inside) and drives great. It's got wire wheels, Monza exhaust, dual SU Carbs etc. His wife paid something like $9000 for it four years ago from a classic British dealer. Yes she overpaid. She made my uncle sell his '77 back when they got married in 1980, she got him this one for his 54th birthday

I told him that these cars were going for $3k-$5k on Ebay.... He said to make him an offer. He would pay to ship the car to me.... Sea Island GA to San Diego CA. He would even let me make payments. He's worth about $50 mil so it's no skin off his back.

I don't think I could part with the Midget, but really want the B. If I end up with two MG's I might as well resign myself to being a single man for the rest of my life.
 
Are you single now? If so, how bad is that.
Maybe the B will attract the type of woman you will need to continue owning and driving LBC"s. JMO.

BUY IT!!! My husband bought me my first LBC, a 77 midget and I spent almost two years in the garage working on it! I LOVED that car, but it was a little small for my drives in city traffic, so he bought me an 80 B that I've been frustrating over for the last 18 months.
Our "garage time" is our favorite time spent together! We love to drive our cars, work on them and we are already talking about what our next project should be.
 
That 64 Midget is being discussed on another thread too.
 
Accept your uncle's generous offer. He'll be the bank for you, cover the costs to get it there, will know the car is going to someone who'll care about it and if he really misses it he can come for a visit. :smile:

And we want PICTURES!! LOL

Were that the case, I'd be single today - I had more than 3 cars when I got married 40 years ago...I now have more than 20 & she's hung around!
 
Tell your wife life's principals: [censored] your rich uncle off, forget anything in the future.

He realizes you will appreciate this car, you should be willing to man up in your home and get the car, whether you store, or drive it. I am sure your uncle would appreciate your backbone as a future reference. He did not get rich by not going after what he wanted. This is a test. He could not make it any easier for you to obtain what he knows you want.


Do not insult his offer. you will regret it

My wife is encouraging me to get the MGB GT I want while refusing to let me sell the Midget to make room for it, all the while asking when I will get around to working on her MGA that needs restoration.

Don't forget that you will have to smog the B in San Diego - are all the necessary parts still there (not a reason not to get it you understand).

Just noticed that you said it had dual SUs - that might be a problem with the smog people..
 
Ah Smog. Yes, it's one of my points of research. I might be able to register in Georgia and keep it that way. We'll see.

Currently the car has Illinois plates, it passed the most recent smog test there with out incident. Not sure if that means much here is CA.

As long as it does not fail our the pipe, you can usually talk your way out of the visual inspection part of the test
 
Just hope the smog tech knows little about lbcs and give them your best "didn't they all come that way?" look.
 
What exactly are the requirements for passing a smog test with an LBC? Are the standards the same as for later cars? I can't imagine that they would be. Especially for a legal but out-of-state car.

I've noticed that the post-1975 LBCs command prices that are a good notch lower than the pre-75s here in CA. I guess a lot of people are confused about the situation, like me, or just don't want to deal with them. Pity, because there are a lot of nice cars in that 75-80 period.

Just consider that a start, and you could then think about what you'd like for the third.... :devilgrin:

I always thought the smog requirements were that the car was as manufactured. Putting the earlier twin carb intake system would be a fail just because.
