This story eerily reminds me of the time my brother lost my deceased dads high school football ring from the late 1930's.
My brother lost the ring at a beach on Long Island, NY but didn't have the guts to tell my mom.
Some guy who lives in California was on vacation and found the ring. Since the name of the high school was clearly on the ring he contacted the school and they were able to supply enough information so that he could track down my mom.
He mailed the ring back to her. My brother couldn't believe it since he thought it was gone forever when he lost it in the sand.
