I still remember my daughter calling that morning about 9:30 and asking "What's going on?". We had no idea until we turned the TV on - and things didn't get any clearer for quite a while.

And my son calling to say he'd be out of touch for a while, since they'd be shutting cell service off at his base.

And posting a small American flag on my web sites (hobby and business) for whatever reason.

Events of that day later had a huge effect on our family and many other families in the US.

But we - the nation - survived it. And we'll continue.
 
Yep - got a funeral to do this morning - WWII Jarhead.

Extra somber note.
 
Many of my colleagues and friends were lost that day in the 99th and 100th floor of the north tower. Last year I listed those I knew best, this year I'm reflecting on those I knew that survived. Their stories were many and varied as to why they weren't in the office when the plane hit. Survivors guilt was pretty common among them then and all I could say is; if you had been there, you would be gone too and thank God you are still with us. It's still too much to take in sometimes.
 
Let us never forget. For one brief moment the country, and for that matter the world, was united, albeit in grief.
 
Had the TV on, getting prepped for the day when "Something has happened at the World Trade Center" came on. The shot of the gaping wound in the first building was all I needed to conclude the talking heads were missing something. By the time the second impact went down I was already furious, then expected nation-wide "lock-down". Horsemits was insistent she was going to her office as usual, I was only a bit less insistent she stay and help with getting supplies together. I expected the NYC body count to be closer to ten thousand. 'smits called from work when the Pentagon impact was announced and sobbing, said she was on her way home.

Horrible day, too many died for nothing. True justice can never be achieved for such heinous deeds. Hopefully (but it's doubtful, IMO) we are all more 'situationally aware' and can perhaps recognize what is going on around us and DO something to interdict or prevent major catastrophe. "Let's roll"...
