Ahhh, the VDP version with the DAIMLER fluted chrome front & rear. Good choice, Tony. One of them is my next purchase as a touring sedan, since I can't seem to find a decent V8-250 at a price I can afford.

Yes, we need pics!

Nope Dart. It's the other way round; a Daimler 4.2 re badged as a Jaguar to sell in the US. After all who would buy a Daimler on this side of the pond, given they haven't ever heard of one.---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

P.S. There is an excellent V8250 on UK E-bay at ~6096.00 USD. [Hurry]--Thats the buy now price!

So true, so true. But, I am on a one person crusade to change that lack of awareness slightly. Am presently trying to set up the https://www.dloc-na.org website. If you want to send me some factuals on the V8 250 plus a good pic I would be glad to include.

When I visited the Browns Lane, Coventry assembly plant in 2000, was told that the current "Daimler" sedans (not the limos) were nothing more than trim levels on the regular Jaguar Sedans and that the US received the same trim level, only badged as a Vanden Plas. The primary identifier was the fluted grill. Otherwise, the cars were built on the same lines by the same workers and only attached different interior and exterior trim pieces. Must have changed since 1985.

Pretty correct - my Vaden Plas has all the upgrades of a Daimler but without the fluted grille.

Tony, you probably know all this already, but:

Modern Jaguars do not hold value - you can buy them for a relative song.

Part of the reason for that is that they are a bigger money pit than a boat.

People that think a car is worth whatever they have in it will NEVER be able to sell any Jaguar for what they think it is worth.

The only way to own a Jaguar is to be prepared to be strong, and if something expensive breaks (and there are few cheap things on the car, and none of them ever break), you cut your losses and send it away - to the junk yard if you can't entice some other prospective owner to take the plunge.

I had a friend that owned an XJ-12 - the quintessential Jaguar as described above. The engine broke. He put 3 times as much as the car was worth into a rebuild simply because he was unable to walk away (or unload it on an unsuspecting innocent). In fact he still owns it and he will probably have to work several years more before retirement because of it. The car is still worth $2000. He will put another 8K into the bodywork. It will then be worth $2500......

Another friend has 4 Jags because they are so cheap. He has a spiffy 80s XJ that he sold to a friend ($3500)and then took back when the friend got the first maintainence estimate.

You have been warned - if major woe befalls it, send it to the old Jags home (wrecker) even if you have to pay them to take it away! Or resell it now if you think you lack the moral fibre to make such a decision. To do otherwise puts you in the same category as my friend that owns a cat that is always getting sick. I think she is up to more than 10K in vet bills now and the damned thing is only 6 years old....

hehehehehe....oh, I think I can handle it.

I just like the body style...took it out for a spin before I left on my trip - man, I love that old car...I'll get photos up when I get home.

Re: I Shouldn't Have - But I Did...Dark Side

Jeeze, what a jaundiced view of Jags. Ever had one, or is it all second hand experiences? I have owned an 89 XJS 5.3 V12 since day one. It now had 155 thousand mostly trouble free miles on it. The heads have never been off, no major components have been replaced, and it runs just fine.Always has.I also own an 85 gray market XJSC, with a 3,6 and a 5 speed. I have owned this car for 3 years, and have also had no problems. Actually, I am going to have to replace the timing chains on this car, but in the cosmic scheme of things, it is not a huge job. It is also a common fault on early 3.6s.
Owning a Jag is not necessarily a money pit, or a scary financial thing. I am far from wealthy, and I have managed OK. Parts are fairly cheap, used parts are plentiful, and there are no end of decent upgrades. You just need to realize a couple of things. Cheap used Jags are usually way behind the maintainence curve. That's why they are cheap. So, you have to catch up on all of that, before the car is really reliable. And the second thing is that they are complicated cars. They were designed when parts were expensive, and labour was cheap. The key to success is to fix it yourself, and to stay on top of the maintainence. It is kinda like owning an airplane, not like a Dodge Dart. Like I said before, "once you go Jaguar, you will never go back".

Re: I Shouldn't Have - But I Did...Dark Side

I agree Jesse. I bought my third Jaguar several months ago (a 1995 Vanden Plas w/66k miles on it) and it has been wonderful. Prior to that I hd a 1974 XJ6L and a 1972 XKE V12 Coupe. This car is wonderful on the road, it had been very nicely maintained, and I expect to get some long life out of it. A friend of mine has a 1996 XJ6 with over 150,000 miles still running very strong. The real key is proper maintenance.
Bill, I'm sure keeping your Lamborghini Islero going can't be cheap, can it?
